Founded by the University of York, The 6G Lab of the North will bring together regional universities, local industry supported by local government.

Industry with highly specialised facilities will also join, offering unique test and development environments at key sites.

Partners will provide complementary expertise and facilities, where resources will be pooled to create a virtual and distributed lab that will be used to pioneer and translate innovative wired and wireless 5G/6G technologies and systems.

Academia can suffer from a lack of specialist expertise, facilities and general fragmentation. The 6G Lab of the North can provide the specialist facilities to undertake experiments and trials, as well as providing partners for collaborative research or contract research.

This sector suffers from a lack of specialist expertise and facilities, and they are unable to access these from one place. The 6G Lab or the North will provide them with access to testing for specialist applications and use cases, bespoke telecom system design, help with bespoke installation of telecom equipment. It will provide environments for testing focussed use cases, specialist support and connection to the wider ecosystem.

SME/Large Industry

SME’s/Large Industry often suffer from a lack of specialist expertise and a lack of facilities. There is a need to reduce development costs of 5G and 6G, and exploit economies of scale for test and development.

The Lab of the North will provide them with a connection to the wider ecosystem, access to specialist test facilities and specialist support. This would include 5G/6G testing, O-RAN testing, CPD and the development of next generation telecoms.
